Michelle Cameron: An Inspiration for Indigenous Women Entrepreneurs

by ICC Staff

Michelle Cameron

Michelle Cameron, a proud member of Peguis First Nation in Manitoba, has emerged as a leading force in Indigenous entrepreneurship. Throughout her career she has demonstrated resilience, innovation, and cultural pride. As the founder and owner of Dreamcatcher Promotions and the Indigenous Nations Apparel Company (INAC), Cameron has significantly contributed to the representation and success of Indigenous businesses in Canada.

Cameron’s journey into entrepreneurship began in 2011 with the launch of Dreamcatcher Embroidery, a home-based business specializing in embroidery services. With an eye for expansion and a commitment to empowering Indigenous branding, she rebranded the company to Dreamcatcher Promotions in 2013.

This strategic shift allowed her to offer a diverse range of promotional products and apparel for businesses, organizations, and communities. Today, Dreamcatcher Promotions is the largest Indigenous-owned promotional company in Canada, employing over 50 staff members, many of whom are Indigenous.

Building on her success, Cameron took a major leap in 2021 by launching the Indigenous Nations Apparel Company (INAC). INAC quickly gained attention for its unique mission—creating high-quality apparel that celebrates Indigenous culture while providing economic opportunities for Indigenous communities.

The company made history by opening a store in Winnipeg’s CF Polo Park, becoming the first Indigenous-owned company to establish a presence in a Cadillac Fairview mall in Canada. Since then, INAC has expanded, adding storefronts in Winnipeg and Saskatoon and securing partnerships with the North West Company to distribute apparel in 80 Northern stores across Canada.

Beyond her businesses, Cameron is deeply committed to promoting Indigenous culture and representation in the retail and fashion industries. A major milestone in her journey came on October 21, 2023, when she organized the first-ever Indigenous Fashion Show at CF Polo Park. The event was a celebration of Indigenous identity, featuring traditional drumming, singing, and dancing alongside contemporary Indigenous fashion.

Cameron’s leadership extends beyond business ownership. As the chair of the Indigenous Chamber of Commerce in Manitoba, she actively advocates for Indigenous businesses, addressing challenges that are often left unheard. She is dedicated to fostering economic growth and self-sufficiency within Indigenous communities, using her platform to amplify Indigenous voices in the business world.

Michelle Cameron’s journey is particularly inspiring for young Indigenous women who aspire to become entrepreneurs. In an industry where Indigenous representation has historically been limited, she has carved out a space for herself and others, proving that success is possible through perseverance, cultural pride, and a strong business vision.

By building companies that celebrate Indigenous identity while fostering economic independence, Cameron serves as a role model for the next generation of Indigenous business leaders. Through her advocacy, mentorship, and commitment to community empowerment, she encourages young women to embrace their heritage, pursue their entrepreneurial dreams, and redefine success on their own terms. Her story is a testament to the power of Indigenous women in business and their ability to create lasting change.
