Indigenous Chamber of Commerce Celebrates 20 Years at Gala Event

By Gabriel Louër

The Indigenous Chamber of Commerce (ICC) marked a significant milestone last Friday, celebrating its 20th anniversary with a grand gala at the historic Fort Garry Hotel in downtown Winnipeg.

The event, held in the opulent grand ballroom, brought together several hundred attendees, including business leaders, government officials, and community members, all united by a shared commitment to fostering Indigenous entrepreneurship and economic growth.

A Tradition of Visionary Indigenous Leadership

The gala was a moment of reflection and celebration, paying tribute to Patricia Turner, the visionary founder of the ICC. Turner’s dedication to advancing the interests of Indigenous businesses has paved the way for countless entrepreneurs over the past two decades. Her contributions have not only created a thriving network of Indigenous enterprises but have also empowered communities across Manitoba.

Michelle Cameron, Chair of the ICC’s board of directors, emphasized the broader impact of supporting Indigenous companies. “When you support an Indigenous company, “ said Cameron, “you’re not just supporting that company; you’re supporting an entire community.”

This sentiment resonates deeply with the mission of the ICC, which aims to create sustainable economic opportunities that uplift Indigenous peoples and foster self-determination.

The evening featured inspiring speeches, cultural performances, and opportunities for networking among the diverse attendees. Among the highlights was a presentation by Community 204, a local non-profit organization that has made a remarkable impact in the community by providing over 40,000 meals and 317 beds for those in need. The total raised for Community 204 reached $1,960, with $960 from masquerade mask sales and an additional $1,000 generously contributed by MedeChan, supporting their vital community work.

Supporting Indigenous Entrepreneurship: A Call to Action

As the ICC looks forward to the next chapter, the gala served as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the work still ahead. With the continued support of businesses, government, and community organizations, the ICC is poised to expand its reach and further empower Indigenous entrepreneurs.

The evening concluded with a renewed call to action for all attendees: to champion Indigenous businesses, advocate for equitable opportunities, and build lasting partnerships that honor the resilience and creativity of Indigenous communities.
